Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The genome sequence and annotated gene list of the honey bee Apis mellifera is the first genome of the Hymenoptera to be deciphered. As such it has already, and will continue, to provide an avalanche of insights into insect biology and the genetic basis of social behavior. The project was centered at the Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center and included an extended network of over 170 researchers from 64 institutions in 15 countries. Over 50 publications resulted from the project including those presented in this special issue.
