Interpretive Summary: Silver Cloud is a new white kidney bean cultivar with exceptional seed appearance, good canning quality, virus resistance, and high yield potential. This cultivar is best adapted to production in the Pacific Northwest, and provides growers of this region with the opportunity to grow a different bean market class with potential for expanding export markets. Silver Cloud should be a suitable replacement for existing white kidney bean cultivars because it is higher yielding and has attractive seed size.

Technical Abstract: Silver Cloud white kidney dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was developed by WSU and USDA-ARS. This cultivar provides a high yielding white kidney with mid season maturity and disease resistance for bean production areas of the Pacific Northwest. Silver Cloud has the combined I and bc-1 genes for resistance to BCMV and has unknown genes that condition complete resistance to BCTV. Silver Cloud was tolerant to bean rust. Under stress conditions of low residual soil nitrogen, low soil moisture, and heavy root rot pressure, Silver Cloud produced 19 and 59% higher yield than Lassen and Beluga white kidney bean checks, respectively. Silver Cloud has medium to late maturity averaging 96 d, 8 d later than Lassen. Silver Cloud produced an average 5 to 10 percent higher yield than Lassen across ~30 environment years. Silver Cloud has an unusual attractive shiny white and large seed. Silver Cloud has acceptable canning quality.
