Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: There have been 40 sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers (http://www.usda.prosser.wsu.edu/miklas/Scartable3.pdf) generated across laboratories that are available for indirect selection of 27 qualitatively and 8 quantitatively expressed genes conditioning resistance to bacterial, fungal, and viral bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) diseases. Some of the SCARs are used routinely for MAS in breeding programs. The markers have been useful for detecting, tracking, combining, pyramiding, and retaining resistance genes and QTL. Recent dry bean germplasm lines released by USDA-ARS with enhanced disease resistance benefited directly from MAS. The specific application of marker-assisted selection for enhanced and more durable disease resistance in common bean will be detailed.
