How will the honey bee genome project help beekeepers. Bee World. 26:1-2. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Thanks in large part to their agricultural importance and potential to inform human medicine, honeybees recently joined an elite group of animals. They are among the first insects whose entire genomes have been unveiled before the prying eyes of scientists. The results from this ongoing project promise to aid bee management and breeding. Specifically, genomic information will be used by honey bee researchers to speed the identification of bee traits involved with disease, nutrition, and behavior, and by disease diagnostics labs, and larger bee breeding operations to screen for these traits in current honey bee stock. |
