Registration of 'blush' light red kidney bean. Crop Science. 45:799. Interpretive Summary: Light red kidney beans are produced on about 60,000 acres nationwide. Only a few cultivars are available for growers to choose from, which increases the genetic vulnerability of this bean market class to pathogens. Blush kidney bean was developed and released by USDA-ARS and Washington State University for improved disease resistance to viruses and root rot organisms, increased seed size, earlier maturity, and improved yield potential in comparison to the standard variety Kardinal. Blush kidney bean is most adapted to commercial production in ID, OR, and WA, and will provide growers there with a cultivar with improved disease resistance and agronomic traits. Technical Abstract: Blush (seed lot 95-2166) is an F10 derived F13 bulk with an upright bush habit from the cross 84BR-1122/K-42. USDA breeding line 84BR-1122 was a root rot tolerant selection from bush snap bean cv. Contender, and K-42 is a bush, light red kidney germplasm release developed by Dr. D. W. Burke (USDA-ARS, Prosser, WA). Blush has complete resistance to CTV (presumed to be due to two dominant epistatic factors) and I bc-1 resistance to BCMV. Blush is similar in yield (2700 kg/ha) to the commercial cv. Kardinal (2870 kg/ha), but matured in 100 days versus 105 for Kardinal. In addition, Kardinal averaged 1932 seed per kg, while Blush averaged 1780 seed per kg in 1995 replicated trials at Othello, WA. |
