Pectin derivatives as a carrier for colon-specific drug delivery. Abstract for American Chemical Society 229th National Meeting, San Diego, 13-19, 2005. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Recently there has been increased interest in combining pectin with other materials for the treatment of gastoenterological disorders. Pectin is under research and development for use as a drug carrier for oral drug delivery, as a natural therapeutic for diseases related to irritation of mucous membranes, or as a physical barrier for the protection of epithelium against opportunistic microbial invasion during stress. One area of intensive study is the interaction of pectin with mucin networks in the gastrointestinal tract. In the current study, pectin derivatives with negative, positive, or neutral charges were prepared and the effect of pectin electric charge on mucin network formation was evaluated. As a result, a novel pectin/zein complex delivery system was developed for use in colon-specific drug delivery. |
