Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Fusarium graminearum is a fungus that causes ear rot in maize and produces toxic metabolites (mycotoxins). One such mycotoxin is zearalenone, which has estrogenic activity. Contaminated feed can cause illness in livestock, particularly swine. Testing of commodities for zearalenone is currently done with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) or expensive chromatographic methods. Previously we have reported on the use of a fluorescence polarization immunoassay for detection of zearalenone in maize. The current report describes improvements to the assay including the use of a hand-held device and the comparison of five new zearalenone antibodies. This fast, easy to use, and low cost assays provides an additional tool for the rapid screening of commodities for zearalenone.
