Technical Abstract: An isolate of BCMNV from Kimberly, ID was initially determined by ELISA and dry bean host range studies to be the NL3 strain. However, mosaic symptoms occurred sooner and were more severe on differential bean lines compared to symptoms induced by the standard Drijfhout strain of NL3 (NL3-D). The isolate, designated NL3-K, differed from NL3-D by producing necrotic local lesions on some bean lines containing the <I>I</I>and <I>bc</I><sup>3</sup> resistance genes. Deduced amino acid sequence data obtained near the 5' terminal of the P1 region revealed the NL3-K strain to be a recombinant between NL3-D and the Blackeye cowpea strain of BCMV. The first 110 amino acids at the N-terminal of the P1 protein were 86% identical with the cowpea strain. Following a transition region consisting of 5 amino acids, the remaining 3134 amino acids of NL3-K were 99% identical with the NL3-D strain. This is the first reported evidence of recombination between strains of BCMV and BCMNV.
