Interpretive Summary: Bean golden yellow mosaic virus is a devastating disease of dry and snap bean in the Caribbean, Central America, and Florida. Developing bean cultivars with genetic resistance is the most effective means of controlling this disease. Three germplasm lines were released which possess a new source of natural resistance to combat this virus disease. The resistance was obtained from a different bean species Scarlet Runner Bean. This new source of resistance will contribute to the development of bean cultivars with more effective and durable resistance to bean golden yellow mosaic virus. Such cultivars will insure profitable yields for growers, reduce need for insecticides to control the whitefly vector of the virus, and provide consumers with a healthier and higher quality food product.
Technical Abstract: Bean golden yellow mosaic virus (BGYMV) resistant common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) lines PR9771-3-2, PR0247-49, and PR0157-4-1 were developed and released collaboratively by the Puerto Rico Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA-ARS. In the Caribbean Basin, bean golden yellow mosaic, a whitefly transmitted Begomovirus, can cause significant yield loss of beans. G35127, a scarlet runner bean (P. coccineus L.) line, was identified as a source of resistance to BGYMV. Preliminary results suggest that BGYMV resistance of G35127 was conferred by two genes, subsequently identified as a recessive gene for resistance to chlorotic mosaic and a dominant gene for resistance to pod deformation. These three dry bean germplasm lines possess the new resistance to BGYMV transferred from scarlet runner bean.
