Interpretive Summary: Plants have mechanisms of resisting diseases that we may be able to exploit for better disease control and disease resistance. One type of plant defense mechanism is called Induced Resistance, and can develop in plants after they successfully resist a pathogen or in plants that have been stimulated by application of an elicitor of these defenses. We are studying this type of defense mechanism in potato in order to improve disease resistance in potato.

Technical Abstract: Induced Resistance is being characterized in potato. Salicylic acid signaling is being examined and significant differences have been found between potato and most other plants. These differences may be important for successful use of induced resistance for disease control in potato and generation of potato with superior disease resistance.
