Common bean gene pool information provides guidance for effective deployment of disease resistance genes. Abstr.) Phytopathology 93(suppl.): S70. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Major genes control resistance in beans to Uromyces appendiculatus and Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. Field collections of these pathogens frequently contain many virulence phenotypes. Released bean cultivars with single resistance genes to these pathogens have often succumbed to new pathotypes. Virulence analyses shows that these pathogens have co-evolved with the different genetic backgrounds present in the gene pool structure of the host. Andean races of both pathogens are mostly pathogenic on Andean beans, whereas Middle American races are often pathogenic on both host gene pools, although they tend to be more severe on the Middle American beans. Release of cultivars with a single, race-specific resistance gene should be avoided. We have developed bean germplasm lines combining complementary Middle American and Andean resistance genes effective against multiple races of these pathogens. |
