Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Several laboratories have begun to analyze alkylphenols by LC/MS methods and take advantage of the ease with which these substituted phenols form sensitive cationic adducts, especially with sodium. We have modified this approach by substituting ammonium for the sodium and performing MS/MS analyses. In contrast to sodium, ammonium forms a less tightly bound species that can be induced to form daughter ions with standard argon collision gas processing. Performing multiple reaction monitoring and scanning for the daughter products was found to achieve nearly the same sensitivity as the sodium method while greatly improving selectivity. This method also avoids problems such as doubly charged parent compounds which have been noted with the sodium method. The specificity of this method is especially helpful at improving identification and quantification of these analytes in the presence of complex interferences such as encountered with fish samples. We have successfully measured alkyphenols (both nonyl and octyl-substituted forms from 0 to 5 ethoxy substituted) in fish and other matrices. LC separation has been accomplished using a newly developed size-exclusion/reverse-phase partitioning process.
