Technical Abstract: Avian influenza is a disease of poultry caused by an orthomyxovirus and impacts international trade. Control programs for AI varies, but has included use of vaccines. However, vaccination should only be viewed as a single tool in an overall comprehensive control strategy that utilizes biosecurity, surveillance and education. Various vaccines are effective against AI and include conventional inactivated AI vaccines to newer genetically engineered vaccines such as vectored viruses, subunit proteins and DNA vaccines. The genetically engineered vaccines protect from clinical signs and death, and reduce replication of field virus with a homologous hemagglutinin subtype. These vaccines also have some advantages over inactivated virus vaccines by preventing interference with surveillance programs. This information will be helpful in international control of avian influenza. |
