Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The new millennium has also renewed research efforts on mycotoxins. There have been numerous publications and many completed collaborative studies, most of which involve the use of biotechnology-based techniques. It is not unexpected that all of the recently adopted First Official Methods are immunoaffinity cleanup techniques in conjunction with chromatographic separation and determination. Two methods for fumonisins and one method for aflatoxin have been approved this year. Our presentation will focus on sampling, method development, incidence and occurrence of mycotoxins in foods and feeds, as well as toxic effects of mycotoxins on animal health. The major mycotoxins of interest include aflatoxins, aflatoxin M1, alternaria toxins, citrinin, cyclopiazonic acid, ergot alkaloids, fumonisins, ochratoxins, patulin, trichothecenes, and zearalenone.
