Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This chapter is one in a series of chapters in one volume of a multi-volume series of books providing a fundamental overview of the fungi. This chapter reviews the overall biology, ecology, physiology, reproduction, systematics and evolution of the fungi in the class Zygomycetes (Division Zygomycota). The overall conclusion of this review supported the growing consensus that the Class Zygomycetes is a polyphyletic assemblage of fungi that do not have a single common ancestor. The rationale for this conclusion is well supported by the observations and data reported herein. The taxonomic part of this chapter provides a comprehensive summary of the orders, families, and genera of the Zygomycota and of the sorts of taxonomic characters used to classify them.
