Technical Abstract: The potential for non-point source pollution of surface waters from agricultural continues to be a concern. A study investigated the relationship between soil test P with P losses in runoff in calcareous and non-calcareous soils. Runoff samples were collected from four soils in pasture exhibiting a wide range in P levels. In addition, a study was conducted to determine the impact of surface residue management (chisel tillage, no tillage, and pasture) and application to dry and wet soil conditions. Results indicate that in pastures the relationship between soil P and runoff P losses were reduced in calcareous compared to non-calcareous soils. Also, soil water content may be an important factor in P losses when fertilizing pasture. For tilled soil, P losses was reduced by maintaining surface residue and applying fertilizers to dry soil.
