Technical Abstract: Lipids can be encapsulated in starch-oil composites (Fantesk**TM) by jet-cooking them with an aqueous dispersion of starch. The jet-cooked product is dried to give a free flowing powder that contains the lipid phase in droplets ranging from 1-10 micrometers. This powder can easily be dispersed in water with mechanical stirring. Fantesk can also act as an emulsifier for blending lipids. The lipid phase does not separate from these dispersions upon standing or when subjected to several freeze-thaw cycles. Previously, Fantesk formulations containing various lubricant formulations were successfully tested in metalworking and drilling mud applications. In this work the friction properties of solid film lubricant formulations comprising starch-oil composites were studied. Fantesk formulations comprising starch, soybean oil, and other vegetable oils were applied on metal sheets from aqueous sucrose solutions. The coefficients of friction of the resulting thick solid lubricant films were evaluated under boundary conditions.
