Interpretive Summary: Reference materials (RMs), which seek to match appropriate matrices and analytes with respective methods, are becoming the preferred means for assuring equivalent analytical method performance in diverse laboratories. A peer review system by experts in respective fields of analysis will help to assure that available reference materials are appropriate for their intended purpose. The Technical Division on Reference Materials (TDRM), AOAC International is proposing a program for recognizing linking of specific reference materials to specific AOAC Official Methods of Analysis (OMA), through a thorough peer reviewed selection system, under the auspices of the AOAC Official Methods Board and the Executive Committee of the TDRM. Potential RM/Method Matching (RM/MM) proposals will be submitted to a RM/MM Committee. After technical review of the suitability of the proposed RM by the RM/MM Committee, acceptable matches are recommended for review by the current AOAC process (General Referee, Methods Committee, and Official Methods Board). Several trial matches have been utilized to develop and test the proposed system. The end product of this effort, a listing of recognized matches is information that will be used by Food Testing and Analysis Labs in the regulatory and private sectors.

Technical Abstract: Use of reference materials (RMs), which seek to match appropriate matrices and analytes with respective methods, is becoming a preferred means for assuring equivalent analytical method performance in diverse laboratories. The end product of this effort could be a stand-alone document, a section of the OMA, or a site within the AOAC web site listing recognized matches.
