Such communication is essential for the exchange of agricultural commodities around the world. A USDA database is currently available with accurate taxonomic information on over 10,000 economically important plants. These data include scientific names of the economically important vascular plants as well as common names, distribution records, and economic uses. This publication describes this database in order that scientists, policy makers, commodity traders, and persons involved in agriculture and world trade of agricultural and horticultural goods will know of its existence and usefulness. Technical Abstract: The GRIN Database contains accurate information on plants of economic importance to US agriculture. A new publication: World Economic Plants: a standard reference provides substantive reference data for over 9,500 vascular plants that are important or of potential importance in world trade. |
