Technical Abstract: Plum pox virus (PPV) is the causal agent of plum pox disease, also known as sharka, of stone fruits. PPV is the most devastating virus of stone fruits, which may cause up to 100% yield loss. It has not been reported in the U.S. or Canada but it has been found in Europe, the Middle East, and Chile. It is of quarantine importance in many countries, including the U.S. The comprehensive article on PPV is written specifically to professional plant pathologists and plant virologists who are interested in research and control of this pathogen worldwide. This information is most valuable to the U.S. Department of Agriculture to prevent the introduction of this economically important exotic pathogen to the U.S. agriculture.
