Research Project: Application Study on Sorghum Lines with Special Starch Traits and Fast Detection Using NIR Technology

Location: Grain Quality and Structure Research

Project Number: 3020-30600-002-029-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2026
End Date: Aug 31, 2028

Objective:
The objectives of this project are to use the high amylose sorghum samples from Dr. Tuinstra to explore potential unique application functionality of those sorghum lines and to improve the accuracy and robustness of our single kernel NIR models for detecting starch (amylopectin and amylose) related features in sorghum.

Approach:
Collaborate with Purdue University to study potential unique application functionalities of their high amylose sorghum lines and to improve the prediction performance of our single kernel NIR models on starch related traits of sorghum grains. The ARS laboratory will use the unique sorghum samples (high amylose contents, different breeding approaches, and growing location than we currently don't have) from Purdue to conduct basic analysis for physical, chemical, rheological properties on the samples. The Purdue collaborator will use their unique sorghum germplasm resources and breeding technology to produce sorghum lines with high amylose contents.
