Project Number: 0500-00087-001-000-D
Project Type: In-House Appropriated
Start Date: Jul 1, 2022
End Date: Jun 30, 2027
Objective:
Objective 1: To construct culturally appropriate surveys (BAFS) to assess DG adherence barriers and facilitators in caregivers and children and conduct a pilot to determine the psychometric properties of the surveys.
Approach:
The primary goal is to identify barriers and facilitators of adherence to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DG) and to examine how differential profiles of adherence relate to obesity.Children and their caregivers from the major U.S. racial and ethnic groups (African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic) will be recruited for study participation near the seven geographical locations served by the USDA, ARS Human Nutrition Research Centers in Arkansas, California, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Texas, and the Delta Nutrition Project in the Lower Mississippi Delta region. A survey instrument to capture barrier and facilitator information will be developed, pilot tested to evaluate psychometric properties, and then incorporated into a large cross-sectional survey to relate the information to body composition and actual DG adherence. Analyses will also be conducted to determine if DG adherence differs by age, gender, racial/ethnic group, SES, geographic, and other physical, psychological, and cultural factors.
