Research Project: Sorghum Phenolic Acids: Stability During Pet Food Processing and Their Effects on Pet Food Quality and Gut Health in Healthy Adult Dogs

Location: Grain Quality and Structure Research

Project Number: 3020-43440-002-039-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 15, 2024
End Date: Nov 30, 2026

Objective:
The major overreaching goal of this proposed agreement is to investigate the impact of pet food processing methods (extrusion and canning) on the loss and structural alterations of phenolic compounds from red sorghum bran, to examine the protective role of these phenolic compounds within various heat-processed pet food matrices and to evaluate the impact of a high intake of red sorghum bran on gut health in healthy adult dogs. The United Sorghum CheckOff is sponsoring the production of extruded pet food and the associated animal study, which includes covering animal per diem, nutrient digestibility assessments, and metabolic outcomes. This proposed agreement aims to generate additional data, thereby enhancing the project funded by the United Sorghum CheckOff and strengthening collaborative efforts to advance both fundamental and applied scientific knowledge.

Approach:
ARS investigators will characterize and quantify phenolic compounds and total advanced glycation end products in pet food products.
