Research Project: Effect of Plant Systemic Resistance and Role of Type III Secretion System in Colonization of Basil and Lettuce by Salmonella enterica

Location: Produce Safety and Microbiology Research

Project Number: 2030-42000-050-004-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2015
End Date: Jun 30, 2019

Objective:
To investigate the effect of systemic resistance and the role of type III secretion system in colonization of lettuce and basil by Salmonella.

Approach:
Conduct Salmonella population dynamics studies in systemic acquired resistance(SAR)-induced and noninduced plants; screen a tagged transposon library of Samonella in SAR-induced and noninduced plants; and perform in planta molecular assays to test for transfer of Salmonella effectors into plant tissue via type III secretion.
