Research Project: Buffers for Environmental Stewardship on Poultry and Livestock Farms

Location: Pasture Systems & Watershed Management Research

Project Number: 8070-13000-012-29-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2013
End Date: Feb 27, 2015

This agreement will accelerate efforts aimed at addressing national nutrient management priorities through modeling and collaboration with groups around the USA to ensure that Phosphorus (P)-Index tools adequately assess the risk of phosphorus loss and are calibrated and validated for local use in a coordinated and systematic fashion.

Watersheds in the Chesapeake, Heartland and Southeastern regions of the US will serve as the test bed for the P Index using monitoring data and model output. Each watershed will be subject to assessments at field and watershed scales by Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and/or Agricultural Policy/Environmental eXtender (APEX) model and at field scale by the local P Index. ARS will coordinate modeling between Southern Extension Research Activity (SERA)-17 teams working to improve the P Index.
