2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
To develop productive group III, IV and V disease resistant, soybean varieties with improved protein, quantity, quality and stability.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Utilize classical and marker assisted breeding approaches to discover and introduce novel genes from adapted lines and plant introductions to develop high yielding group III, IV and V varieties with: a) 37% or greater protein and acceptable oil with resistance to nematodes and diseases, b) Improved lysine, methionine, cysteine, and other potentially limiting amino acids, c) Improve protein stability across environments, and c) Develop low phytate soybeans without seed germination issues.

3. Progress Report:
This project is related to Objective 2 of the in-house project: To discover novel genes/alleles in soybean for seed composition, determine their inheritance, determine genomic location, transfer to adapted germplasm, and release. Fifty-five group 0-II and 50 group III-V high protein plant introductions (PIs) were evaluated over two years in southern Missouri, central Missouri and Minnesota to identify lines that were stable in protein content over six sites significantly different in climate. Two plant introductions (PIs): 567245 (group II with 38% protein- 13% moisture) and 567425B (group III with 41% protein- 13% moisture), varied 1% or less in protein content across environments. These PIs will be further investigated for utility to improve protein stability in northern USA areas where low protein content is often a problem and for all varieties to develop consistent, stable, high protein contents regardless of environment. S07-6557 a conventional group V, higher protein line has been tested in the quality traits over 33 locations for three years. Protein content averaged 37.3% and oil 18.5% versus 35.0% and 19.2% for the 5002T check. The meal generated from the Missouri line was >50% protein. Yield of S07-6557 averaged the same in yield as 5002T check. S09-13185 was tested in the quality traits test in 2012. Protein content was 37.7% (at 13% moisture) generating over 50% protein meal versus 35% protein and 48% meal for the 5002T check. Yield of S09-13185 averaged 3 bushels per acre (Bu/A) (70.3%) more than 5002T (67.3 Bu/A) and is being considered as a germplasm release. These lines are available to other soybean breeders for crossing.
