Lambs were blocked by breed and randomly yassigned to one of two pens/breed for a 105-d finishing period. The finishing diet was formulated to contain 11% CP, 1.95 Mcal NE for maint./kg, and 1.27 Mcal NE for gain/kg. Pens were used as the experimental unit and data were analyzed by GLM procedures using a model containing YEAR, BREED, and YEAR X BREED. Lambs in the SS group weighed less (P<.05) at the beginning and end of the finishing period, had the poorest (P<.05) ADG and the lowest gain:DM of the five breed groups. Although SS lambs yielded 18% less (P<.05) shoulder than the TP and TS groups, carcass weights and yield of leg, loin, and rack were not differen (P>.10). Lambs produced from crosses of hair sheep with wool sheep can be finished to acceptable carcass weights. |
