Routes to improved physical properties and processing of zein [abstract]. CD-ROM. International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Zein, the predominant corn protein, has been historically formulated into useful films, fibers and other articles; however, the approach utilized at that time is no longer readily commercializable. Zein has two major flaws that are limiting its broad use, its properties are impacted by exposure to moisture and it is not readily processed. Results will be presented detailing our efforts in using processing conditions, additives and cross-linking reagents to deliver a zein based polymer system that can be broadly used. Results will also be shared detailing how changes in the raw material can impact physical properties such as solution and melt rheology and physical properties. |
