Interpretive Summary: Multiple disease and insect pests are capable of attacking wheat in the hard winter wheat growing region and can cause significant losses of yield. In order to develop hard winter wheat cultivars with resistance to all of these pests, wheat breeders need to have access to multiple new resistance genes in agronomically adapted backgrounds. Many strains of the wild relatives of wheat have genes for resistance to various disease and insect pests. We used a strain of the wild relative, Aegilops tauschii, with multiple pest resistances to pollinate susceptible hard winter wheat cultivars. We then used backcrossing to transfer new genes for resistance to wheat curl mite, Stagnospora leaf blotch, and Septoria leaf blotch into the germplasm line KS96WGRC40. These genes should be useful to wheat breeders who are developing cultivars with resistance to these pests.
Technical Abstract: Multiple genes for resistance to disease and arthropod pests of wheat in agronomically adapted backgrounds are needed in the hard winter wheat region. KS96WGRC40 is hard red winter wheat germplasm with resistance to wheat curl mite, Stagnopora leaf blotch, and Septoria leaf blotch. The pedigree of KS96WGRC40 is KS93U69*2/TA 2397. KS93U69 is a sister lnes of KS90WGRC10 (TAM 107*3/TA 2460), and TA 2397 and TA2460 are accession Aegilops tauschii Coss. collected near Sisiar in Afghanistan and Khoshyailagh in Iran, respectively. The wheat curl mite and leaf blotch resistance of KS96WGRC40 are derived from TA 2397. The genetic basis of the resistance has not been determined. KS96WGRC40 also carries the gene Lr41 for resistance to leaf rust from TA 2460 via KS93U69. It is similar TAM 107 in days to heading, plant height, and general phenotype.
