Research Project: Innovative Fertilizer Research for Improved Crop Nutrient Use Efficiency and Reduced Environmental Impacts

Location: National Programs

Project Number: 0500-00109-001-000-D
Project Type: In-House Appropriated

Start Date: Apr 19, 2024
End Date: Apr 18, 2029

Objective:
Determine the ability of innovative fertilizer technology to improve nutrient use efficiency of applied fertilizer for crop production and decrease nutrient loss to the environment.

Approach:
Provide funding to ARS locations to conduct research on: sensor-based, data-driven precision fertilizer application systems that are adapted to different microclimate and soils; soil amendments that include Enhanced Efficiency Fertilizers (EEFs), bio-stimulants, manure, or biochar; targeted experiments to investigate soil nutrient dynamics in connection with the soil microbial as well as soil mineralogy; and behavioral economics studies to identify determinants of market acceptance and producers’ adoption of proposed innovations.
