Objective:
1. Development of russet and processing types of potato that possess strong resistance/immunity to Potato Cyst Nematod (PCN). 2. Exploration of wild potato species for broad-spectrum resistance to Globodera.

Approach:
New populations of potato representing unique individuals with the potential to be new varieties having PCN resistance will be generated following directed hybridizations in the greenhouse between PCN-resistant breeding clones and varieties (round, non-russet skinned) and long, russet-skinned breeding clones and varieties. Wild potato accessions showing a hypersensitive response (HR) phenotype in the infiltrated leaves will be further evaluated for nematode resistance for G. rostochiensis, G. pallida, and G. ellingtonae, respectively, using established protocols.
