Research Project: Conservation Genetics of Pseudophoenix Sargentii and Ekmanii

Location: Subtropical Horticulture Research

Project Number: 6038-13210-003-02-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2017
End Date: Sep 30, 2019

Objective:
To assess the genetic variation in wild populations and ex situ conservation collections of the palm species Pseudophoenix (P.) sargentii and P. ekmannii.

Approach:
ARS and Montgomery Botanical Center (MBC) will work together to genotype with molecular markers populations of two palm species in the wild, and ex situ collections derived from the same populations grown at MBC. These collections will be genotyped at a remote facility (likely the University of Wisconsin Molecular Core Lab), but DNA extraction and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification with primers for 10 markers will be prepared at ARS-SHRS by MBC personnel working in a volunteer capacity. All necessary consumables, materials and supplies will be provided by MBC.
