The Dr. James L. Smith (Smitty) Scholarship
headline bar

Educational programs exist to train scientists; however, only few programs are available to train individuals to be proficient laboratory technicians.  The Real World Education organization is developing such programs directed to training technicians for various areas of science.  One scholarship that the organization will fund is known as The Dr. James L. Smith (Smitty) Scholarship for the purpose of training laboratory technicians who have a handicap but have not asked to be treated differently or for assistance to achieve their goals.  The Scholarship was crafted by a former ARS co-op student from Drexel University, who is currently in New Zealand and was mentored by Dr. Smith, a retired ARS scientist (now a USDA collaborator), many years ago.  James L. Smith, Ph.D. has been hard-of-hearing (approximately 70% hearing loss) since suffering meningitis at 7 months of age.

Congratulations Dr. Smith!
