What is included in the Flavonoid Values for Survey Foods and Beverages?

Two products that can be downloaded and allow estimation of flavonoid intakes by the U.S. population:

  1. The Database of Flavonoid Values for USDA Food Codes (or “Flavonoid Database”), which provides the amounts (mg/100 g) of 29 flavonoids in 6 flavonoid classes present in all foods/beverages in the USDA Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) corresponding to the applicable WWEIA, NHANES dietary data release.

  2. The Flavonoid Intake Data Files, which are the result of applying flavonoid values in the Flavonoid Database to dietary data from What We Eat in America (WWEIA), NHANES.
How can the Flavonoid Values for USDA Survey Foods and Beverages be used?

The Flavonoid Intake Data Files make it possible to estimate flavonoid intakes of the U.S. population and selected subgroups and to link intake data to other dietary/health-related information collected in WWEIA or other components of NHANES.

The Flavonoid Database allows researchers who use FNDDS in their own studies to estimate flavonoid intakes of their study participants and identify potential associations between flavonoid intake and health measures of interest. The same is true for studies using other USDA-food-code based databases, such as the Food Patterns Equivalents Database.

The Flavonoid Database is an addendum to the FNDDS. Flavonoid values in each release correspond to the foods/beverages included in the FNDDS for a given survey. For example, the Flavonoid Database 2007-2008 includes flavonoid values for all foods/beverages in FNDDS 4.1, the version of the FNDDS used to assign nutrient values to WWEIA, NHANES 2007-2008 dietary data. Therefore, the version of the Flavonoid Database employed in analyses should align with the version of the FNDDS associated with each specific survey period.

Flavonoid Intake Data Files

The Flavonoid Database is available in two formats:

  • Microsoft Access database®
  • SAS® dataset

The 2007-2008 and 2007-2010 Flavonoid Database releases are also available as ASCII delimited text files.

For each release, the Flavonoid Intake Data Files include four SAS® data files:

  • For each food/beverage report, the amounts of each of the 29 individual flavonoids, total flavonoids (the sum of all 6 classes), total anthocyanidins, total flavan-3-ols, total flavanones, total flavones, total flavonols, total isoflavones, and total catechins (monomeric flavan-3-ols; 2007-2010 and 2017-2018) consumed on day 1 and day 2.
  • For each respondent, the daily total intakes of the 29 individual flavonoids, total flavonoids (the sum of all 6 classes), total anthocyanidins, total flavan-3-ols, total flavanones, total flavones, total flavonols, total isoflavones, and total catechins (monomeric flavan-3-ols; 2007-2010 and 2017-2018) consumed on day 1 and day 2.

A documentation file, which explains the development of the database and SAS® datasets listed above, is automatically downloaded with both the Flavonoid Database and the Flavonoid Intake Data Files.
