Location: Corn, Soybean and Wheat Quality Research
Project Number: 5082-22000-002-007-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2023
Objective:
Our objective is to use remote sensing to evaluate maize for virus infection. We will use thermal, RGB, hyperspectral, and/or other sensors to evaluate virus infected and uninfected maize and identify unique signatures associated with virus infection/plant health.
Approach:
Commercial sugarcane mosaic virus resistant and susceptible maize hybrids will be artificially inoculated with sugarcane mosaic virus or mock inoculated under field conditions with four replicates per treatment in randomized complete block design. Plants will be visually assessed to evaluate percent of symptomatic plants and yield data will be collected at maturity. Remote sensing data will be collected at 7, 14, and 28 days after inoculation to assess early and late stage infection. Remote sensing data will be analyzed in conjunction with ground truth data to determine specific signatures associated with virus infection and plant health.
