Exhaustive extractions used the sequence: water, sodium pyrophosphate (pyro) at pH 7, pyro at pH 10.6 and pyro/NaOH at pH 12.6. The isolates at pH 2 were passed through XAD-8 and XAD-4 resins in tandem and humic acids, fulvic acids, XAD-4 acids, hydrophobic neutrals and hydrophilic neutrals were isolated and characterized using elemental, amino acid, and sugar analyses, fluorescence, FT-IR, ESR, and CPMAS **13 C-NMR spectroscopy, enhanced chemiluminescence, MALDI MS, and sequential degradations with identifications of the digest products. |
