Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: We launched an effort to produce a reference cattle DNA methylation resource to improve animal production. We will employ experimental pipelines built around next generation sequencing technologies to map DNA methylation in cultured cells and primary tissues systems frequently involved in animal production. These samples include muscle, mammary gland, rumen and digestive tract tissue. We expect to deliver a collection of normal DNA methylation that will provide a reference for comparison and integration with future studies. We plan to compare the distinct patterns in these diverse tissues. We also aim to integrate it with other epigenomics data such as histone modifications, chromatin accessibility and small RNA and mRNA transcripts to further our understanding in animal biology. This study will provide an atlas of DNA methylation across diverse bovine tissues and enable new discoveries about DNA methylation and its role in animal economic traits.
