These diseases are found throughout the maize growing regions of the world. These diseases are caused by viruses, phytoplasmas and spiroplasmas. The pathogens, vectors and plant hosts for the major insect-transmitted diseases of maize world-wide are reviewed. Factors leading to maize virus and mollicute disease emergence, and approaches to their control are discussed.
