Interpretive Summary: Corn viruses are important disease agents worldwide that can be difficult to identify and diagnose. Previously undescribed viruses of corn also emerge periodically and their distributions and importance changes over time. The Compendium of Corn Diseases is a valuable tool for pre-diagnosis of diseases by farmers, extension agents, companies, and scientists. The most recent edition of the Compendium was published in 1999, and there have since been many significant additions to the body of knowledge about corn viruses, and identification of new viruses. In this updated section on "Diseases caused by viruses," we update information and photographs for more than a dozen corn viruses or groups of related corn viruses. The aim of this work to to provide current information on symptoms, distribution, virus characteristics, diagnostics, genetic resistance and management practices for all corn viruses known to cause disease. Updated photographs in this edition show more viruses and will help to better identify and distinguish corn virus symptoms. New corn viruses included in this edition are Wheat mosaic virus (WMoV), the causal agent of High Plains disease in the United States), Maize necrotic streak virus (MNeSV) and Maize fine streak virus (MFSV). Major corn viruses (those having large impacts or distributions) are highlighted, including Maize streak virus (MSV), fijiviruses (Maize rough dwarf virus, Mal de rio cuarto virus, and Rice black streak dwarf virus; MRDV, MRCV, and RBSDV), Maize chlorotic dwarf virus (MCDV), and potyviruses (Maize dwarf mosaic virus and Sugarcane mosaic virus; MDMV and SCMV).
