In: Pimentel, D., editor. Encyclopedia of Pest Management [book online]. 1:1:1-4. Available DOI:10.1081/E-EPM-120037735. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Constraints to the use of the “inundative” or “biopesticide” strategy of biological control include a lack of consistent pest control efficacy, short product shelf-life, and costly production and stabilization processes. Quality control measures that standardize the production, stabilization, formulation, and storage of fungal and viral biological control agents should include validation of appropriate nutritional and environmental conditions during propagule production, evaluation of microbial contamination, and confirmation of pest control efficacy. This article will outline important quality control practices required for the safe use and consistent pest control efficacy of fungal and viral biocontrol agents. |
