Interpretive Summary: This book chapter details the developmental stages for providing industry with efficacious quarantine heat treatments, with specific references to commercializing radio frequency heat treatments that provide quarantine security, commodity quality and shelf life. Consideration is given to commercializing quarantine heat treatments to fit within normal industry practices in order to save time and postharvest handling and treatment costs.
Technical Abstract: Development of thermal treatments requires a sequential approach consisting of laboratory tests to identify one or more heat treatment technologies that can be used for a specific commodity to control target quarantine pests without adversely affecting commodity quality or shelf life. Small scale tests are performed with the selected treatment(s) to identify the most efficacious treatment parameters that meet both industry and regulatory standards and provide the best commodity quality. Commercial equipment is designed to fit industry practices, and confirmatory tests are performed to prove the equipment and the treatment provide quarantine security on a commercial scale. This chapter details each of these quarantine heat treatment developmental stages with specific references to commercializing radio frequency heat treatments.
