Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: We have discovered 4 yeasts and 3 bacteria that are superior antagonists of Fusarium graminearum, the primary causal agent of Fusarium head blight of wheat and barley in the United States. Previous patents have been issued regarding the yeast strains and two of the bacterial strains. In this patent, Bacillus species NRRL B-30212 is shown to be effective in reducing the severity of Fusarium head blight of wheat in greenhouse and field environments when produced using commercially feasible liquid cultivation methodologies and applied to developing wheat heads. This antagonist was initially selected from a pool of more than 700 strains obtained from anthers of wheat, a typical site of infection by Fusarium graminearum. Reductions in disease severity as high as 52% and 54% were obtained when treating wheat heads with NRRL B-30212 in greenhouse and field experiments, respectively. In accordance with this discovery, it is the object of this invention to provide a novel microbial strain that suppresses the profusion of F. graminearum in heads of cereals, particularly wheat and barley.
