Technical Abstract: In the bioinsecticides as well as for the chemical insecticides, appropriate formulation procedure is important for the efficacy in field and shelf life. We tested the AfMNPV shelf life at room and cool conditions of 16 spray-dried, lignin-based formulations. Our results showed that the insecticidal activity of AfMNPV baculovirus was similar for 6 of the 16 formulations stored at room temperature (-25C), and 10 out of 16 stored in cool conditions (-4C), when compared with unformulated virus stored frozen (-20C), after 1-year storage. Varying the concentration of virus among formulations showed no detrimental affect, but the kind of lignin {as lignate salt) might affect the virus stability during storage. Unformulated virus kept at room temperature did not lose activity. In general, when sugar was a formulation ingredient, the virus stability was better when compared with similar formulations with no sugar. Results indicate that sugar may play an important role on virus stability during storage of dry formulations.
