Pathogen Modeling Program - Getting Started

The US Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) Pathogen Modeling Program (PMP) is produced at the USDA-ARS Eastern Regional Research Center (ERRC) in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. The PMP is a package of models that can be used to predict the growth and inactivation of foodborne bacteria, primarily pathogens, under various environmental conditions. These predictions are specific to certain bacterial strains and specific environments (e.g., culture media, food, etc.) that were used to generate the models. The accuracy of these predictions cannot be guaranteed for other bacterial strains and/or environments, without proper validation studies. Since the early 1990s, the PMP has been distributed in various forms, ranging from spreadsheets to stand-alone software. The most current version is 7.0. New versions of the PMP are produced with the addition of new models and/or changes in the model-user interface. We recommend that you bookmark this webpage and revisit it on a periodic basis to find out about new models and PMP enhancements. In an effort to more efficiently provide new models to our customers, we will post them as Excel® workbooks and then incorporate them into a new version of the PMP at a later date. We believe this process will expedite the use of models for food industries, risk assessors and managers, as well as scientists and students at academic institutions.
