Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Over the last three decades or more, researchers have estimated soil properties using visible and near infrared (VNIR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), with varying results. This presentation reviews the history and state-of –the art of VNIR-DRS, including relative estimation accuracy for various soil properties, calibration requirements, and considerations in field vs. laboratory data collection. Suggestions for future research are presented, with focus on opportunities for in-field sensing.
