Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Traditional mechanized agriculture treats large fields with uniform agronomic practices. Precision agriculture/precision farming brings a new concept to manage in-field variability with variable rate application of fertilizers and pesticides, site-specific water management, as well as planting, etc. With help from state of the art of information and electronics technologies with the geospatial analysis capability, farmers can now decide when, where, and how to apply fertilizers, pesticides, and water with the operation of precision farming. This chapter overviews the concept of precision farming, and discusses how remote sensing can be used to assistant precision farming. The chapter also discusses issues with precision farming management, the spectral, spatial, and temporal aspects of using remote sensing imagery in precision farming. A discussion of vegetation indices is followed up. Lastly, applications of remote sensing data in precision farming, including soil mapping, crop water stress detection, insect/pest infestation identification, crop nitrogen stress detection, weed mapping, and herbicide drift detection are discussed.
