Interpretive Summary: The reniform nematode has become the most damaging nematode on cotton in the Mid South area of the United States. Though tolerant cultivars support growth and reproduction of the nematode, they do so without associated reductions in yield of the cotton plant and therefore may be beneficial to growers from an economic perspective. Field trials conducted in west-central Mississippi identified three cultivars with yields comparable to a commercially productive standard that did not appear to suffer significant yield loss in the presence of reniform nematode: Croplan Genetics 3520 B2RF, DynaGrow 2520 B2RF, and Stoneville 5242 BR. Additional cultivars that did not suffer significant yield loss but were not as productive as the commercial standard were Stoneville 5599 BR, Deltapine 488 BG/RR, and Fibermax 960 B2R. Though limited in number, tolerant cultivars are commercially available and can help reduce economic losses to reniform nematode in the Mississippi Delta region.
Technical Abstract: Field studies were conducted during the growing seasons of 2006 and 2007 at the Delta Research and Extension Center, Stoneville, MS to screen selected entries in the 2006 Mississippi Cotton Variety Trials for productivity and for tolerance to the reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis). Trials were carried out in non-irrigated fields with primarily Bosket very fine sandy loam and Dundee very fine sandy loam soils. The 2006 season was characterized by extreme drought during most of the growing season. Results varied between locations and years due to environmental conditions. The only cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) cultivars tested and considered both commercially productive and tolerant to the reniform nematode, when compared to the check cultivars, were ‘Cropland Genetics 3520 B2RF,’ ‘DynaGrow 2520 B2RF,’ and ‘Stoneville 5242 BR.’ Cultivar Stoneville 5599 BR exhibited tolerance to reniform nematode but yield was considered productive in only two of the four environments. Additional cultivars identified as tolerant to the reniform nematode were ‘Deltapine 488 BG/RR’ and ‘Fibermax 960 B2R’, though these did not yield similar or greater than the productive check cultivar ‘Deltapine 445 BG/RR.’ These cultivars can help reduce the economic losses to reniform nematode in the Mississippi Delta region.
