Soybean Disease Compendium of Soybean Diseases and Pest, Fifth Edition. 84-85. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Stachybotrys root rot is caused by Stachybotrys chartarum, a cellulytic saprophytic hyphomycete fungus. The pathogen produces mycotoxins including a host of immunosupressant compounds for human and is one of the causes of the "sick building syndrome." Although S. chartarum is rarely known as a plant pathogen, it was reported from soybean roots in the United States in 2000. The color of the root lesions was from brown, dark brown to black. The fungus isolated from soybean was identified using biological, chemical, and molecular approaches and confirmed to produce macrocyclic trichothecene mycotoxins. Information about this relatively new disease will be added to the Compendium of Soybean Disease. |
