Application of dna markers to the rice experiment station breeding programs.. Rice Field Day Abstract. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: DNA markers are used in many breeding programs as a means to identify varieties (e.g., seed purity), confirm genetic crosses, and assist in the selection of individuals carrying desired genes. DNA markers are very powerful tools that can greatly enhance the speed and efficiency of breeding programs and even permit breeders to address desirable traits that cannot be tested for on location (e.g., resistance to diseases not currently present). However, as with any technology, the usefulness and cost-effectiveness of DNA markers depends on the manner in which they are implemented and the problem they are being used to address. Over the past few years, we have worked to apply DNA markers to the RES breeding programs. More recently, we have been focusing on transferring this technology to the RES in order to meet the needs of the breeding programs in a timely and efficient manner. Our progress on employing various DNA markers and setting up an on-site DNA marker lab at the RES is described. |
