Technical Abstract: This book chapter reviews an extensive compilation of the literature dealing with cryopreservation of non-mammalian animal systems. It contains brief technical details of research and methodologies developed for the long-term liquid nitrogen storage of various forms of animal germplasm, excluding spermatozoa. The review is arranged in phylogenetic order beginning with Platyhelminthes and ending with Chordata. The obstacles and innovations for successful cryopreservation of these animal systems are identified, both individually and collectively, with the intention that a broad multi-species perspective will lend insight and aid future research efforts. In addition to summarizing nearly 40 years of research on cryopreservation of non-mammalian systems, the chapter contains a section on storage of alternative forms of germplasm, namely, embryonic stem cells, blastomeres, and nuclei. The review ends with suggestions for future research direction and areas of emphasis that could benefit the preservation of animal diversity through the use of cryogenic technology.
